I have fond memories of Spring break when I was a kid. Playdates with friends, lazy afternoons watching movies on the couch, later bedtimes…
It was glorious.
But I’m not entirely sure my mother felt the same way.
While she undoubtedly enjoyed the reprieve from school drop-offs and pick-ups, extracurricular activities, and packing school lunches, we never, ever, travelled over Spring break, leaving her to keep 2 kids entertained and happy for 12+ hours a day.
And now that I’m a mom myself, I am fully aware that’s no small feat.
In years past, I’ve tried a variety of different things to keep my daughter happy while she’s on break from school. Some years I’ve convinced my husband to take a family vacation, other years I’ve enrolled her in camps, and last year I did a bit of both. I organized various Spring break kids activities for us to enjoy together each morning, and then my mom popped over in the afternoons to allow me a few hours to get caught up with work, go to the gym, or do whatever else I needed to do so I could give 100% of myself to my daughter the following morning.
And you know what?
Last year’s setup worked pretty well.
Sure, I would have preferred to spend the week drinking margaritas with my husband on a beach somewhere while my sweet girl built sand castles, but finding a balance between spending quality time with my daughter and having a bit of time to regroup and recharge ended up being a great alternative.
Of course, not everyone has a mom who is willing or able to travel 45+ minutes both ways to help out (love you mom!), but that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to maintain your sanity when your kids are home from school.
If you’re gearing up for a staycation with your little ones this March, and feel desperate at the thought of trying to keep them entertained, we’ve got 100 awesome Spring break kids activities to keep them engaged and happy while you enjoy a couple of adult popsicles.
