Summer is coming. Beach getaways and pool hangs will have us living in our bikinis and a toned core is a goal for many. Winter is kind of like hibernation. Unless you live somewhere that’s hot all the time or take a sunny vacation, you can pretty much layer up and hide all of your winter weight gain. With so many temptations in the winter (rich foods, holiday baking, flavoured seasonal lattes, to name a few), it’s easy to put your workouts on the back burner and gain a little weight. But now it’s time to get back on track with some core exercises that make you excited and proud to spend days on end in your bathing suit!
The advantages of working your core aren’t just for looks. Having a strong core helps you in your everyday life with many things. It’s your body’s powerhouse, and if it’s not at it’s tip top shape, you could start having major problems down the road (if you’re not already!). First off, strengthening your core will help you fight injuries. When your core is stable and strong, you’ll be less prone to injury and your fitness will be better overall. It can also help with back pain. When your abdominals are weak, the muscles in your back start over compensating. Tightening your core will balance it out so you don’t have to worry about back problems.
Having a strong core also ensures that your inner organs and central nervous system are protected. Your core is where so many essential body parts are located and it’s important to make sure they’re protected as you go about your day. It also improves both your posture and balance, which are key to your overall health. When you work your core, the muscles from the top to bottom and back to front of your torso are engaged, which helps you stand tall. Good posture is essential for better breathing, and also decreases your risk for things such as disc herniation. And having good balance decreases your chance of injury and increases coordination and overall athletics.
Of course you’ll see your best results with clean eating and a regular fitness regime! Be consistent and work these core exercises into your gym routine to loose belly fat and look toned this summer!
