If you are reading this, it’s probably not just for fun. If you have found yourself frantically searching how to get rid of morning sickness in between retches…hang in there, mama. Morning sickness, while generally short-lived, can make you miserable. Thankfully, there are some things you can do to ease the symptoms and try to learn how to get rid of morning sickness altogether.

What Is Morning Sickness?

Morning sickness is the term for nausea during pregnancy. While nausea often hits in the morning (hence the name), it actually can pop up at any time during the day. Generally, morning sickness starts around six weeks into your pregnancy or 2 weeks after your first missed period.

What Causes Morning Sickness?

While experts don’t know exactly what causes it, morning sickness is most likely caused by everyone’s favorite friend—hormones! Are you shocked? At this point in your life, you’ve probably heard all about hormones and how they can wreak havoc on your system (PMS, anyone?). While you will no longer have to deal with Aunt Flo during your pregnancy, that doesn’t mean your hormone issues will go away, sadly!

Experts believe there are a few main hormones that contribute most to morning sickness (thanks a lot!), including hormones like:

  • Estrogen. During pregnancy, your estrogen levels are up to 100 times higher than normal, which could play a factor.
  • Progesterone. Progesterone also rises during pregnancy. These hormones relax your uterine lining to prevent childbirth, but can also relax your stomach muscles, causing extra stomach acid.
  • hCG. This is the hormone that the embryo starts creating directly after conception.

Other things that can contribute to morning sickness include:

Low magnesium levels. While there are no conclusive scientific studies, many women have reported feeling significantly better after boosting their magnesium levels while pregnant.

Another trigger that contributes to morning sickness is your heightened sense of smell during pregnancy. You may find that even the most seemingly simple things like opening your spice cabinet door or walking by a trash can may send you running for the toilet.

Is Morning Sickness Dangerous?

While it’s not fun, morning sickness is not dangerous to you or your baby. However, if you are suffering from severe vomiting with an inability to keep food down, you could be dealing with a form of extreme morning sickness called Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). HG is only harmful to yourself and baby if left untreated due to lack of nutrition and electrolyte loss.

When Will My Morning Sickness It End?

The good news is morning sickness doesn’t last forever (although it certainly feels like it!). Morning sickness begins around 6 weeks and generally ends around week 12 for most women, although some do experience nausea throughout their entire pregnancy. The general rule of thumb is you should be feeling much better by the end of your first trimester.

Now, onto the part you probably want to hear most—how to get rid of morning sickness. The bad news here is there is no “cure” to morning sickness, but the good news is there are several things you can do to help alleviate your symptoms and feel much better.

  1. Suck on sour candy. When faced with morning sickness, many women reach for a piece of hard candy to feel better. Preggy Pop Drops or Morning Sickness Sweets are a popular choice just for this occasion.
  2. Eat smaller meals. Try eating smaller meals throughout the day rather than a few large ones. Some people have also recommended drinking water throughout the day except with meals—The American Pregnancy Association recommends having water 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after eating.
  3. Get plenty of rest. Try your best to get as much sleep as possible. Allow yourself to sleep in a little if at all possible, and take naps if you feel tired—just avoid taking them within 30 minutes after a meal. In the first trimester of your pregnancy, taking a nap may be just what you need!
  4. Sniff essential oils. There are some essential oils that women swear by to help stop nausea. You can either diffuse them with an essential oil diffuser or sniff them via a personal inhaler. Some popular scents to try are ginger essential oil, lemon oil, orange oil, lavender or peppermint essential oil.
  5. Sip hot tea. Hot tea has helped settle many a stomach. There is a tea for everyone – some excellent ones to try are this ginger peach nausea tea, a peppermint anti-morning sickness tea or this ginger mint morning wellness tea.
  6. Eat whatever you want, as you want it. If the only thing that sounds good is vanilla ice cream, eat it when the mood strikes.
  7. Make a new signature drink. Lemon-flavored water or lemonade have been shown to help relieve nausea—squeeze a little lemon into lukewarm water and see how you feel.
  8. Try a different kind of breakfast in bread. Eat some light crackers while still lying in bed each morning, wait 15 minutes and then get up for the day.
  9. Supplement with B6. The vitamin B6 is said to help women quell their nausea. This article recommends trying 25 mg of B6 3 times a day (in addition to your prenatal vitamin).
  10. Tell those around you that you are sensitive to scents. Nothing churns your stomach more than a big whiff of something. Even if the smell is something you used to love like your husband’s aftershave, ask him to go without it for a few weeks if necessary.
  11. Eat bland foods. If nothing sounds good, keep things as bland as possible. White rice with broth, a plain baked potato or toast are foods that can help sensitive stomachs. Avoid spicy or greasy foods at all costs!
  12. Eat ginger. If you are wondering how to prevent morning sickness, ginger may be the ticket. Outside of consuming ginger in your tea, you can also try ginger flavored candy, such as these tummy drops made with natural ginger.
  13. Try a spray. If you suspect that low magnesium levels may be a factor to your morning sickness, try this magnesium spray made with organic magnesium from the Dead Sea. If you feel a wave of nausea come on, spray it onto your wrists or feet and gently massage it into your skin.
  14. Add in a probiotic. If your gut health isn’t quite right, it’s easier to become more susceptible to nausea. Try a prenatal probiotic and see if it makes a difference!
  15. Use mouthwash or mints. If you feel like you can taste your own breath, use a mint or some mouthwash to create a clean feeling. Brushing your teeth has the same effect, albeit less portable.
  16. Ask for a prescription. Finally, if nothing else is helping, talk to your doctor. There are prescriptions they can give you that are pregnancy-safe and might help with your nausea.

Remember, be gentle and kind to yourself during this time! Growing a human is no easy feat, and you are dealing with everything from a changing body to the natural emotional waves that come from a major life change. Hang in there, mama! You’ll be feeling better before you know it.
