We all have lazy days every once in a while (they’re totally necessary), but if you find you’re spending too much time on your couch and you’re having trouble getting things done, there could be an underlying issue. Laziness manifests for a number of different reasons, from feeling overwhelmed, to low energy levels, too many distractions, or a fear of failure. Figuring out what’s causing you to feel lazy is the first step to beating it. Personal development takes effort and dedication. We’ve rounded up 10 tips on how to beat laziness so you can feel more productive.

How to Beat Laziness

1. Create a Plan of Action
Getting things done can seem really overwhelming if you don’t have a plan. Take some time to sit down and create a plan of action to reach your goals. Be truthful with yourself about how much time and effort is needed to meet each goal and from there, create a realistic action plan. This will provide direction and confidence that can help if you hit any hurdles along the way. It will improve your productivity, enhance focus, and reduce stress.

2. Set Manageable Goals
It’s great to have big goals, but setting unrealistic goals for yourself can lead to burnout. Burnout can result in exhaustion, a lack of motivation and interest, and a longing to escape, which can manifest itself in “laziness”. Avoid this by setting smaller, more attainable goals that you can realistically accomplish in a set time frame. You’ll feel less overwhelmed and your productivity levels will remain more consistent.

3. Give Yourself Breaks
Our brains were not designed to focus on a single task for a long period of time. Our concentration maxes out after around 45 minutes and brain activity starts to decrease. Forcing yourself to focus on the same task for too long can lead to poor performance and frustration.

This is why it’s so important to give yourself a break- let your mind relax, take a walk, or focus on something entertaining rather than productivity-focused. You can also try the Pomodoro technique, where you work in focused intervals of 25 minutes, with a five minute break. After four intervals, you take a 15 minute break. This can help keep you motivated and focused on the task at hand.

4. Create Accountability
If you find yourself frequently bailing on your to-do list, one of the best things you can do is find an accountability partner. Talk to a friend or family member you admire about the changes you’re making and have them check in on your progress, offering to do the same for them. You’re more likely to follow through with your goals if someone is invested in your progress.

5. Avoid Distractions
Getting caught up in distractions such as scrolling social media or snacking in your kitchen can make you feel lazy and adversely affect your performance. Find ways to make your distractions less accessible- place your phone in another room while you work, or put a self control app on your laptop to keep you from going on certain websites. If you work from home and get easily distracted by chores around the house, try working from a library or co-working space to help you stay on task.

6. Create Strong Routines
Routines are a key part of a productive lifestyle. They’re one of the best ways to overcome laziness because they eventually become habitual. When you set a routine, you don’t even need to think about certain things you need to do because they become natural and automatic. One of the most effective ways to start a new routine is to do it at the same time everyday- exercise at the same time, read at the same time, and work on your most important tasks at the same time each day. This can help you beat your laziness and get things done.

7. Make Chores Fun
Many people would rather binge their favourite Netflix show on the couch than clean their bathroom or vacuum their space. However, there are ways to make these tasks more enjoyable. Listen to your favourite podcast or the latest album drop from your favourite artist. You could also call a friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with for a while and chat to them while you work. It will make the time go by so much faster.

8. Watch Your Diet
Your diet could certainly be affecting your energy levels, making you feel lazy and fatigued. Nutrition and productivity are linked, so make sure to steer clear of foods that drain your energy. Foods like refined carbs, fried and fast foods, and foods and drinks high in sugar cause blood sugar spikes that zap your energy. High-protein foods, on the other hand, will boost your energy and keep your blood sugar stable. These include foods like Greek yogurt, eggs, lean meats, tuna, tofu, beans, and almonds. Prioritize them as much as possible.

9. Exercise
Exercising on a regular basis has so many benefits and it’s a great way to beat laziness. Even a short walk or bike ride outside can increase your energy levels, improve your mood, and reduce feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression (all of which can have you feeling unmotivated and lazy). People who exercise regularly are more productive, more energized, and more creative. Try to workout three to four times a week, but at the very least, get outside for a walk everyday.

10. Channel Positive Energy
Negativity can make you feel drained and exhausted. Focus on positivity and wellness, and take time to celebrate your accomplishments. Noting your milestones can help motivate you to keep going and will boost your confidence and positivity. Avoid negative self-talk, which can derail your efforts and slow your momentum.
