While mineral makeup of the past was chalky and heavy, today’s formulas offer a lighter, luxe feeling that’s super easy to work with. The makeup we use on our skin not only affects the way we look, it also impacts our health. Our skin is our body’s largest organ and it’s important we treat it as well as possible. Mineral makeup doesn’t contain oils, waxes, preservatives, synthetic fragrances or bulking agents used by traditional makeup brands, so it goes a lot farther and is better for your skin. If you’re new to the world of mineral makeup, here’s how to apply mineral makeup using our best tips and hacks!

What Is Mineral Makeup?

Mineral makeup is made up of natural minerals from the earth, such as mica, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide. These minerals are milled to a super-fine consistency and combined with pigment to create different makeup products, from foundation to blush to bronzer. Mineral makeup will typically contain a few key ingredients. Iron oxides to match different skin types and colours, zinc oxide as a natural sunscreen and antioxidant, mica powder for a gorgeous shimmer, and titanium dioxide, which is a natural pigment and sunscreen.

Traditional makeup can do a lot of harm to your skin. It can clog your pores, dry your skin, and cause rashes and allergies. It can also lead to acne if the products include pore-clogging, irritating ingredients. Mineral makeup only includes a few ingredients and doesn’t contain any dyes, preservatives, fragrances, or parabens. It’s also non-comedogenic, which helps prevent unwanted breakouts.

How to Apply Mineral Makeup

1. Less is More
You don’t need to use as much mineral makeup as you would traditional makeup, so people tend to apply too much in the beginning. To avoid cakiness and heaviness, start out with a small amount, assess and see how much coverage you need, and apply more if you need it. Take your time with applying a mineral powder foundation and don’t rush it. And always remember- with mineral makeup, less is more.

2. Use a Buffing Brush
For a mineral powder foundation, use a buffing brush to apply it to your skin. To start, pour a small amount of the powder foundation into the cap and swirl the foundation brush in it. Tap off the excess powder, then buff and swirl it into the skin, making sure you don’t miss any spots or crevices on your face. Move your brush in small, circular motions for flawless application.

It’s a natural foundation routine that works for any skin type, and shows you her best tips for applying this type of foundation for best results. She uses the bareMinerals Powder Foundation and shares how she gets a gorgeous, natural, and seamless look!

4. Try Cream to Powder
Cream to powder mineral foundations go on with a smooth texture and set with the matte finish of a powder. For this type of formula, use a beauty sponge for a light, airbrushed look. Apply in light, outward motions, starting from the middle of your face and working your way out toward the edges. Blend as needed.

5. Avoid Blotchiness
One of the main reasons your makeup may be uneven or blotchy is that the mineral makeup is applied before your moisturizer has been absorbed. Wait a minute or two for your moisturizer to set in before applying your base. You can also try using a facial spray as a substitute moisturizer for oily skin.

6. Even Out Pores and Fine Lines
To even out pores and fine lines, make sure to use a primer before applying mineral powders. Spritz with a facial spray and mix a loose powder into a moisturizer and make a cream foundation. Apply it with your fingers or a sponge. If you use a powder and it accentuates the lines under your eyes, dampen a cotton pad with facial spray and gently push it into the problem area, or gently dab on a small amount of moisturizer. You can apply moisturizer after the minerals have been applied.
