Losing a loved one is never easy. It comes with sadness, grief, and pain, and can be incredibly difficult to navigate. While funerals and memorial services have been the traditional ceremonies to honour the life of a loved one, these may not feel quite right. A celebration of life offers a more relaxed, joyful event that honours your loved one in a special way. Often inspired by the departed themself, there are many different ways you can celebrate your loved one. Here are 9 meaningful celebration of life ideas to consider.
Celebration of Life vs Memorial Service: What’s the Difference?
A celebration of life is often more casual and less structured than a funeral or memorial service. The celebration usually has a more relaxed, party-like atmosphere that really celebrates the person’s life. Laughter, joy, and conversation are more acceptable and there may be music playing in the background, creating a livelier environment.
While a memorial service often takes place at a funeral home or place of worship, a celebration of life can take place at any location, and may or may not include elements from a traditional funeral service- the choice is up to the family.
Attire for a celebration of life can range from formal to casual, but rarely complies to the traditional black clothing worn at funerals. Overall, a memorial service tends to be more somber, whereas a celebration of life focuses on the person’s life and the joy they brought their loved ones.
9 Meaningful Celebration of Life Ideas
1. A Foodie Celebration
Was your loved one a serious foodie? Did they love trying new restaurants, cooking, or have a penchant for finding the best bakeries everywhere they went? Build a celebration around good food. Consider making it a potluck, where everyone can bring a dish that reminds them of the honouree, have it catered, or even hire some food trucks to park outside the event. There are so many creative ways to create a memorable foodie event that honours your loved one.
2. An Active Event
If your loved one was an athlete, or loved to run, hike, or row, consider doing some sort of active event for their celebration of life. Get a group together to do a 5km run, or hike a gorgeous trail in their honour. Afterwards, you can meet up with others who may be less into the activity for food, drink, and sharing fond memories.
3. Super Bowl Celebration
If you lost someone who was a football fanatic, honour them with a Super Bowl Sunday celebration. It doesn’t actually have to be Super Bowl Sunday, but you get the idea. This one works if the celebration of life is during football season. Have the game playing in the background, and have all their favourite game day food, from chicken wings to nachos to sliders. Oh, and don’t forget beer! Share your favourite stories and dress with team spirit.
4. Rent Out a Restaurant
Did your loved one have a restaurant they absolutely loved and frequented all the time? Consider renting it out (or renting out a room if it’s a really big space) so you can honour them in their favourite place. Make sure to order all their favourites on the menu and have champagne to toast their memory.
5. Memorial Sporting Event
This is another idea for a sport’s lover. Set up a softball game, golf tournament or afternoon of bowling in their honour. This is a fun way to bring everyone together over some friendly competition and cherished stories and memories. You can also use the event to raise funds for a charity that was meaningful to them.
6. Cocktail Party
Did your loved one love to go out and have a good time? Ask everyone to dress up in cocktail attire for an evening of drinks and dancing. Create a playlist with their favourite tunes, and have passed apps, food stations, and of course a dance floor. Party the night away in a way they would have absolutely loved!
7. High Tea Celebration
We love this idea for any tea aficionado. Could you always find them with a cup of tea in their hand? Host a high tea celebration with a variety of loose leaf teas, finger sandwiches, and sweet treats. You can host it anywhere from your home to a hotel, indoors or out. This one may work better with a smaller group, but it’s totally up to the host! Depending on the number of guests, you can get really into the theme with vintage tea cups and saucers.
8. Travel-Themed Fête
Was your loved one a jet-setter? Feature photos of them in different places around the world, display their favourite souvenirs, and have the menu be inspired by their most-loved destinations. Put up travel-inspired decor like maps, globes, and postcards, and if they were a fan of a certain city, consider incorporating items that represent that place. For example, if they loved Rome, you can incorporate Italian design elements. You can also create a travel-themed memory jar where guests can write down their favourite stories from the traveller’s adventures.
9. Their Favourite Place
Did they have a cottage or lake house that they absolutely adored spending time at? Plan a celebration of life in their favourite place so everyone can enjoy being there. It will be a beautiful reminder of them and such a lovely way to honour them. Have their favourite foods, play their favourite music, and allow everyone to share their most treasured stories.
Losing a loved one is incredibly difficult, but throwing a celebration of life allows you to honour them in a way they would have loved. We hope you are inspired by these ideas.
