Decluttering isn’t just necessary for a tidy space, it can also improve your mood, boost your concentration and focus, and help you sleep better. If you notice you feel stressed out or anxious when your home is cluttered, there’s a reason for that. Unorganized spaces can trigger these feelings and make them worse. Decluttering goes beyond organizing your home, it’s a journey towards simplifying your life, adopting a minimalist attitude, and freeing up physical and mental space. Wondering how to simplify your life? Here are nine genius decluttering tips every girl should know.

9 Genius Decluttering Tips

1. Adopt the “Touch It Once” Principle
Are your drawers (or even countertops) filled with paper clutter? So much of the paper clutter in our homes could be diminished with the “touch it once” principle. Stand by the recycling bin as you sort mail, open up credit card statements and put anything you need to get rid of in the shredder right away, and sign permission slips as soon as they come through the door. Keeping this principle at the forefront of your mind will help you eliminate clutter in your home.

2. Purge Your Closet
Getting rid of clothes is one of the hardest things for many people to do. But there are probably a lot of pieces you can get rid of that are taking up space in your closet. Take an afternoon to go through your closet item by item and purge things such as: damaged or stained clothing, cheap Halloween or other costumes, bad bridesmaid dresses, outdated trend pieces, anything that doesn’t fit, and anything you haven’t worn in the past year. Decluttering your closet promotes a sense of clarity, contentment, and happiness in your life. You can choose from clothing you actually wear and love, and make room for new thoughtfully-purchased pieces.

3. Wait a Week (or More) Before Buying Something
Retail therapy is a real thing and with so many products being promoted on social media, it’s easier than ever to make mindless purchasing decisions. If you see something you really like online or on social media, add it to your wish list and wait before buying it. You can set the timeline for yourself, but we recommend at least a week (a month is better). Chances are you’ll have forgotten about it, but if it’s still high on your mind after the time period is up, you’ll know it’s worth buying.

4. Practice the One-In-One-Out Rule
One of the best things you can do to adopt a more minimalist mindset is practice the one-in-one-out rule. The basis of this rule is for every new thing that comes into your house (a piece of clothing, a decor item, a new kitchen tool), you get rid of something else. If you stick to this, you won’t be able to accumulate one single extra thing. Create a list of items you’ll donate or giveaway as you bring new things in to help you stick to the habit.

5. Use Washi Tape to Declutter Your Kitchen
We absolutely love this tip from Apartment Therapy. It can be hard to keep track of what you actually use in your kitchen (other than the items you use everyday!). To decide what’s worth keeping, set a length of time such as six months or a year to see what items you actually use. Stick a piece of washi tape on your items at the beginning of the experiment. When you use an item, peel the tape off. At the end, you can see everything that hasn’t been used as it will still have the tape on it. You can get rid of these things.

6. Ask If It Sparks Joy
One of the main rules in Marie Kondo’s organizing playbook is asking yourself if the items in your home spark joy. How do you do that? Pick up each item one at a time and ask yourself “does this bring me joy?”. Pay attention to how your body reacts as everyone experiences joy differently. By selecting the things that inspire joy, you can figure out what you truly love and need. Everything else, you can donate, give away, or throw out (if it’s in bad shape).

7. Practice Weekly Decluttering
Most people do one or two big decluttering sessions a year, but if you can make it part of your regular weekly routine, you’ll have more luck with minimizing your possessions. Go through your belongings on a regular basis and donate or get rid of anything that you don’t use that’s taking up space. Or, see if there’s a way you can recycle or reuse items. For example, you can turn old clothes or blankets into cleaning rags or turn wine bottles into candle holders.

8. Check What You Have Before Shopping
I don’t know how many times I’ve bought something at the drugstore just to find multiples of it hidden away in my cupboard. Before you go out to do errands, make sure to take stock of what you already have. Make a list of things you think you need to buy, then go through your cupboards and drawers to make sure you actually need them. You may find you have extras of them already, which will save you money and space.

9. Try a No Spend Challenge
A no spend challenge is exactly what it sounds like. You choose a set time frame (usually a month) and you only spend money on absolute necessities (food, transportation, housing, bills, etc.). No eating out at restaurants, no shopping for clothes or home decor, no monthly membership at a trendy fitness studio. This will keep you from buying things you don’t need, keep unnecessary items out of your space, and help you save money.

Ready to declutter your life? These tips will help you minimize, simplify, and get rid of all the stuff you don’t need.
