Planning a New Years Eve party for teens can be tricky. They’re not little kids who will love just about anything you plan, but they’re also not adults who can drink and go out on the town. They want to have a fun night that doesn’t feel lame, and you want to figure out how to make the evening fun and safe for them without being too overbearing. There are a number of things you can do to make the night a success! Here are 7 New Years Eve party ideas for teens!

How to Plan a New Year’s Eve Party for Teens

1. Let Them Design a Menu
Good food is an essential part of any party. Your teens know their friends best, so ask them to design the menu with you. Finger foods and appetizers are always a hit with teens, plus they’re easy to put out and don’t require much clean up. Think: dips, sliders, chicken bites, mini pizzas, a veggie platter, skewers, and snacks like chips and party mix. Consult with your teen to ensure you include their favourites!

2. Get Them Involved
Teens like to have their say, and chances are, they probably have some fun ideas up their sleeves. Get them involved in planning the party so you can ensure they’ll love whatever you plan for NYE. Ask them what they’d like to do and brainstorm fun ideas together. They’ll love being a part of the planning process- it will make them even more excited for the night!

3. Balance Fun and Safety
Having fun and staying safe are the two most important parts of planning a New Years Eve party for teens. While you don’t want your teen to feel lame, you also want to ensure they celebrate with their friends safely.

This is easier to do if the party’s at your own home, but if they’re going to an event or heading to a friend’s, make sure they know they can always get a ride or use a ride share app to get home. Remind them to never feel pressured to do anything they don’t want to do, but if they find themselves in a sticky situation, not to be scared to tell you and ask for help!

New Years Eve Party Ideas for Teens

1. Throw a Decade Theme Party
Parties are always more fun when you can dress up for a theme! Have your teen choose a decade to ask everyone to channel. The roaring twenties will have everyone in vintage flapper dresses and glitzy get ups, while for a nineties party, guests can wear their favourite denim, crop tops, or slip dresses. You can also get into the theme with decor and food that screams your chosen decade!

2. Set Up a Fun Photo Booth
If there’s one thing almost all teens have in common- they love to take photos. Set up a photo booth with props like feather boas, NYE party signs, glitter glasses, and funny moustaches. Or choose a theme like disco or the wild west. For the background, you can use something simple like gold tinsel and you can set up a tripod for guests to take photos with their phones.

3. Have a Slumber Party
Teens will go crazy for a slumber party. They can all dress in their coziest pjs, choose a few movies to watch, and order takeout from their favourite restaurant (pizza is always a hit!). Make sure to have lots of snacks and mocktail options available. You can also have activities like making friendship bracelets, having a bake-off, or break out the karaoke machine. A big part of the slumber party will be the next morning. Whip up some waffles or pancakes, or make a breakfast casserole in advance to start the new year right!

4. Murder Mystery Party
Murder mystery parties are a ton of fun and are the perfect activity for teens! You can find lots of different options online that will have everyone racing against the clock to solve the mystery before midnight. Decorate your house to fit the scene of the mystery or opt for classic NYE decorations like streamers, balloons, and twinkle lights. Your teen and their friends are sure to love it!

5. Fun Late Night Outing
If your teen and their friends want to do something out of the house for NYE, consider a fun outing nearby. This could include ice skating rinks, bowling alleys, mini golf courses, or roller skating. This way they get some freedom, but there’s still some supervision.

6. Painting Party
Does your teen have a creative side? Organize a painting party for them and a few close friends. There are a few ways to go about this. Most cities have wine and painting parties (you can ask them to switch out the wine for a non-alcohol option like sparkling cider), and the group can create matching art pieces to remember the night by. You could also consider doing something similar at home by buying paints and canvases for each guest.

7. Host a Dinner Party
If your teen is craving more of an adult-like soiree, consider hosting a fancy dinner party. Have candles, flowers, satin napkins, and matching dinnerware so they feel like they’re out at a special event. Tie bows around coupe cocktail glasses, and fill them with sparkling cider, and print out stylish name tags and menus. Start the night with small bites, and you can order a bunch of pizzas or make a big batch of pasta or a casserole. The food doesn’t need to be extravagant. Get a fun NYE cake or cupcakes for dessert, and ask everyone to dress in their NYE best!

We hope you and your teen love these NYE ideas and have a fun and safe night celebrating!
