6 Tips for Making Homemade Marshmallows
While store bought marshmallows are extremely convenient, homemade marshmallows are healthier and surprisingly easy to make. The internet is full of DIY marshmallow recipes, including corn syrup free, sugar free, and gluten free options. There are lots of sugar alternatives you can incorporate into your recipe, and you can infuse your marshmallows with different flavours, making them even more delicious! You can also cut them into different shapes and sizes, which can be a fun baking project to do with your kids.
If you’re interested in making homemade marshmallows, here are some tips and tricks to ensure your finished product is a success!
1. Plan ahead
While homemade marshmallows are fairly easy to make and don’t require a ton of ingredients, they do have to sit for quite a while before they are ready to eat. If you’re using your marshmallows in a recipe, make sure you factor this into your timing. You may want to make them ahead of time to be safe.
2. Invest in the right tools
You will likely already have most of the tools you need to make homemade marshmallows in your kitchen, such as a saucepan, square pan, spatula, cutting board, and a knife, but there are a few other items that will make the process much easier. You’ll need a candy thermometer to measure the temperature of your sugar, a fine mesh sieve for dusting your pan and marshmallows with confectioners sugar, and a mixer with a whisk attachment to beat the marshmallows into a fluffy consistency.
3. Prepare your pan
Make sure you coat your pan with butter or shortening before pouring in your marshmallow mixture and leaving it to set. This will ensure you can easily remove the marshmallows once they are ready. If you don’t have butter or shortening, apply a small amount of vegetable oil to the pan and then line it with parchment paper. I learned the hard way that oil on it’s own will stick to the marshmallows!
4. Confectioners sugar is your friend
Unless you’re making sugar-free marshmallows, applying a little vegetable oil to your knife and then dusting it with confectioners sugar will help you cut your marshmallows without them sticking. You can also sprinkle a little confectioners sugar over top of your marshmallows after they have been cut into your desired shape to make them less sticky.
5. Layer with parchment paper
When storing your homemade marshmallows in a container, you want to keep them separate so they don’t stick together. After you’ve dusted them with confectioners sugar, layer them with parchment paper and then place them in an airtight container.
6. Store at room temperature
Do not put your marshmallows in the fridge or freezer!
