If you’re thinking about getting a spray tan, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve been an avid spray tanner for the past five years, getting bronzed for all my special events and vacations. I know it can be a bit intimidating if you’ve never had one before, but fear not, (most) spray tans of today won’t turn you orange. To make sure you’re going to a reputable spot, take a look at their social media pages and website to check out their photos and reviews. Today we’re sharing our best spray tanning tips for beginners from how to prep your skin to how to make your tan last as long as possible.

10 Spray Tanning Tips for Beginners

1. Opt for an All Natural Solution
You want to feel good about what you’re putting on your body, and this includes your spray tan. When you’re scoping out places to get your tan, look for a natural, paraben-free spray tan solution. There are solutions that are rich in antioxidants, packed with vitamins, and are cruelty-free. Also be on the lookout for extra ingredients like Matrixyl 3000. Matrixyl accelerates cell renewal and stimulates collagen, which helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and promotes softer, smoother skin.

2. Classic vs. Express
Most spray tan places will have two different options when it comes to how fast your tan develops. A classic or regular spray tan will usually take eight to 12 hours to develop (this means you wait eight to 12 hours to rinse off the solution). If you don’t have that much time, go for the express or rapid spray tan, which can typically be rinsed off in two to four hours. The amount of time differs by solution, and your spray tan artist will let you know about their specific spray tan.

3. Pre-Tan Instructions
To get the most out of your spray tan, there are certain things you should (and shouldn’t) do before your tan. If you shave or wax any part of your body regularly, make sure to do so 12 to 24 hours before your appointment to ensure all pores are properly closed before applying the solution. You should also exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment. This is crucial to get rid of any dead skin cells, makeup, or previous spray tan before applying fresh solution.

4. What to Wear to Your Appointment
Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment to prevent rubbing and decrease the chances of transferring your tan. Tight fitting clothing, such as jeans or leggings, will cause friction that can rub and wreck your tan while it’s drying. It’s also recommended not to wear a bra immediately after your session. You also shouldn’t wear makeup, deodorant, or lotion to your spray tan session. These act as a barrier and will not tan certain areas properly.

5. When to Book
It’s generally recommended to book your spray tan two days before your big event. Day one of your tan will be the most dramatic and you’ll feel darker than you’re used to. It’s usually best to be able to do your initial rinse off and have one more shower before your event. If you’re going on a vacation, get your spray tan the day before so that it will last longer into your trip. If you’re getting a tan for a special event, such as your wedding day, be sure to get a trial tan about a month before to test what day of your tan you like best. This way you can plan accordingly.

6. Post-Tan Instructions
Avoid any contact with water before your first shower. This will cause your tan to stop developing and can result in a streaky tan. This includes sweating, skin to skin contact, or any activities that include water. During your initial rinse, don’t use soap, exfoliants, shower gels, or shampoos- only use water. Don’t shave and wait 24 hours to wash your hair. After you shower, pat your body dry with a towel- don’t rub the water off as this will mess up the tan. After your first shower, you can apply deodorant, lotion, and perfume, wear normal clothes, workout, and sweat- although the more you do the last two, the more quickly your tan will fade.

7. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Moisturizing and hydrating your skin is key to maintaining your spray tan. Moisturizing can start right after your initial shower. The more you moisturize, the longer your tan will last and the fade out will be more even. This goes for moisturizing in general. If you regularly moisturize your skin everyday (even when you don’t have a spray tan), your skin will take the spray tan better. It’s recommended to moisturize twice a day when you have a spray tan and also drink lots of water to keep your skin nice and hydrated.

8. How Long Will My Spray Tan Last?
Your spray tan will last five to 10 days, and will fade gradually throughout this time. Everyone’s skin is different and naturally exfoliates at different rates, so it’s hard to give an exact amount of days. The longevity of your tan will depend on how fast your body’s exfoliation process is, as well as how well you maintain your tan. Extended hot showers, shaving, and waxing speeds up your skin’s natural exfoliation process and will shorten the length of your tan. Spending an extended time in any body of water (bath, the ocean, a pool, etc.) will fade your tan more quickly.

9. Do I Need to Use Sunscreen?
Although your skin will turn a nice, glowy brown after your spray tan, this does NOT mean you can skip the sunscreen. Unless you’re told otherwise by your spray tan artist, most spray tan solutions don’t contain SPF. Just because you look tan, doesn’t mean you won’t burn, so make sure to apply sunscreen all over your body if you’re going to be out in the sun.

10. When to Get Your Nails Done
If you’re getting a spray tan for an event or vacation, chances are you’re getting a mani and pedi too. One of the most common questions is whether to get your nails done before or after your spray tan. It’s highly encouraged to get your mani and pedi before your spray tan. All of the rubbing, oils, and exfoliation that happens at the nail salon can rub off and ruin your tan, so book your nail appointment one to two days before your tan!
