Well, it’s official, my friends.

Fall has finally arrived.

And while I’m sad to put my tanks, tees, shorts, and flip flops away, I’m kind of enjoying all of the things fall has to offer.

Pumpkin spice lattes.

Halloween candy.

Red wine.

Black Friday sales.

And let’s not forget my new obsession with scarves.

The only problem, for me anyway, is that summer always does a number on my hair, and I’m often left with a hot mess once the weather cools down. I don’t know if it’s the chlorine from swimming lessons, the extra time in the sun, or the fact that I spend so much time trying out my favorite summer updos in an effort to make myself look carefree and stylish during the summer months, but my hair is in some dire TLC these days. It just looks so dull and limp, you know?

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

I should just go for a cut and style, right?

And you’re probably right.

But I’ve been trying REALLY HARD to grow my hair out for the last 3+ years, and I’m trying not to visit the salon as frequently as I did when I had a full-time job and disposable income, so I decided to dig deep into the archives of my brain and come up with some tips for healthier hair to help give my melon the shine I’m craving.

And since I know I’m not the only one who struggles with the maintenance of healthy hair, I decided to share my tips with all of you.

You’re welcome!

1. EAT THE RIGHT FOODS

Did you know there are certain foods you can eat to make your hair healthier? Neither did I! But thanks to this awesome list of Top 10 Foods for Healthy Hair I found on WebMD, I have a new-found interest for foods like salmon, sweet potatoes, blueberries, and chicken.

2. DON’T SHAMPOO EVERYDAY

My stylist has been telling me not to wash my hair everyday FOR YEARS, and after figuring out the art of prolonging a hair wash while still looking glamorous a few months ago, I finally understand why. My hair isn’t as greasy as it was when I was washing it everyday, it looks healthier, and I no longer have to get up at the crack of dawn to wash and style it every single day of my life.

3. SHAMPOO AND CONDITION PROPERLY

I used to think the more shampoo and conditioner I applied to my hair, the cleaner and softer it would be. But I was wrong. As it turns out, shampooing your roots and conditioning your ends is best for healthy-looking hair. Don’t believe me? Then check out How to Wash Your Hair – The Right Way over on Daily Makeover. Step #2 has been a life changer for me!

4. APPLY A HAIR MASK

I’ve heard that egg yolks are good for strengthening hair and making it look and feel soft and silky, but did you know honey is good for restoring moisture to lifeless hair, and apple cider vinegar helps get rid of excess oils and grease? It’s true! Check out these Top 5 Easy Homemade Hair Mask Recipes for Beautiful Hair I found on HubPages for great (natural) DIY hair mask recipes you can try from the comfort of your own bathroom!

5. INVEST IN THE RIGHT STYLING PRODUCTS

Contrary to popular belief, I am not a snob when it comes to shampoos and conditioners, and I’m totally cool with drugstore mousses and styling creams, but I am the first to admit I am VERY particular when it comes to heat styling products. Why? Because I once burnt my hair with a flat iron, and it took YEARS for it to completely grow out. So if you’re a regular user of blow dyers, hair straighteners, and curling irons like I am, make sure to invest in a good heat-styling protector. Stat.

6. PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM WINDY CONDITIONS

Whenever the weatherman warns me to be prepared for heavy winds, I make sure to tie my hair away from my face before I leave the house because I always find severely wind-blown hair breaks like crazy when I run my hands or a brush through it. So throw a couple of hair ties in your purse to be safe on blustery days!

7. AVOID PERMANENT HAIR DYES

My hair has been going gray for months (okay, years), but I’m petrified I will totally ruin my locks if I start dyeing it before I really need to. And that’s why I love this collection of 7 Tips for Preventing and Hiding Gray Hair Without Permanent Hair Dye.
