Many, many years ago, when I was partying it up in university and my biggest worry was what I was going to wear to our local pub on Friday night, a girlfriend from high school came to visit me. We hadn’t seen each other in about 4 years, and it was so nice to hang out, catch up, and reminisce about all of the ridiculous things we did when we were teenagers.
The day before my friend was due to fly back to the US, I took her to see my grandparents. She had met them when they visited us in Singapore several years prior, and since we were nearing the end of Christmas break and I knew my grandma likely had tons of delicious treats crowding her fridge, the idea of a home-cooked meal sounded pretty amazing.
When we arrived, my grandad was sitting in his chair in the living room reading a book with the TV blaring in the background, and shortly after my grandma greeted us at the door and hung our coats up, she led us to the dining room where the biggest assortment of cookie balls I’d ever seen was waiting for us.
We must’ve eaten 20 cookie balls a piece in one sitting while we chatted away about anything and everything, and my grandad recalled that afternoon many times in the years that followed (‘How’s that friend of yours? What was her name? She loved those cookie balls!’).
