Household chores can seem overwhelming and daunting, especially if you’re always on the go. Cooking and cleaning can take up a huge chunk of time and the last thing you probably want to do is spend extra time in the kitchen. That’s why we’ve come up with 13 genius kitchen hacks to save you time and money.

13 Genius Kitchen Hacks to Save You Time and Money

1. Make Your Own Salad Dressing
Instead of spending money on pre-made salad dressing, it’s one of the quickest and easiest things to make with ingredients you already have in your fridge and panty. Mix together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, dijon mustard, salt and pepper and any other spices you love. Put it in the fridge in a reusable salad dressing container for easy use anytime.

2. Keep Brown Sugar From Drying Out
Are you constantly throwing out your brown sugar because it dries out before you’re done with it? Throw a slice of white bread or a few marshmallows into your brown sugar container to allow the sugar to draw moisture from it. The bread or marshmallows harden while the brown sugar softens, keeping or returning it to a soft texture and saving you money in the long run.

3. Freeze Fresh Herbs
Fresh herbs are usually sold in big bunches and if you only use them for a recipe or two, they often go to waste. Instead of throwing them out, cut them up and freeze what you don’t use in ice cube trays with water. You can toss them into soups or stews or mix them with butter for sautéing. You can also simply throw your herbs into a plastic bag and place them in the freezer.

4. Pre-Heat to Save Time
Waiting for your water to boil or oven to heat up can seem like an eternity if it’s all you’re waiting for. If you have a bunch of things to do in the kitchen and boiling water or turning on the oven is one of them, make it the first thing you do. This ensures it’s ready for you when you need it and you don’t have to waste time waiting for it to heat up.

5. Re-use Lemon Rinds to Clean
Lemons are a great natural cleaning product as they’re naturally antibacterial and act as bleach to clean, shine and remove stains in your kitchen and bathrooms. You can also make an all-purpose cleaning spray with lemon rinds and white vinegar.

6. Freeze Your Fruits and Vegetables
If your fresh fruits and veggies are constantly going bad and getting tossed, make it a habit to freeze them before they turn. Seal them in a freezer bag for later use and make sure to write the date on the bag with a permanent marker so you know how long they’ve been in the freezer. Use them for breakfast smoothies, soups or baked goods.

7 .Use Baking Soda for Odours
If your garbage or compost bin is getting a bit smelly, sprinkle a handful of baking soda at the bottom before you insert the bag. It’s quick and easy and will prevent the rest of your kitchen from smelling up. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and will absorb any bad odours from your kitchen waste.

8. Steam Clean Your Microwave
Steam cleaning your microwave is easier than you may think. Simply cut a lemon into 2 halves and place them in a microwavable bowl or jug of water. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat for 3 minutes. Then leave the bowl to stand for 5 minutes. This generates steam, and along with the lemon (a natural de-greaser), helps loosen the dried-on food and stains inside your microwave. Once you remove the bowl, just quickly wipe it to clean!

9. Use Dryer Sheets for More Than Laundry
Dryer sheets are awesome multitaskers that you can use for more than just laundry. They can remove water marks from your kitchen faucets and appliance handles, plus they’re also an easy way to wipe baseboards down.

10. Quickly Clean Your Dishwasher
After a while, your dishwasher can get pretty dirty and even start to smell. To keep it running efficiently, it’s important to clean it thoroughly. Once a month, drop a dishwasher cleaning tablet in while your detergent cleans your dishes. This cleaner will get to the tub, rack, pumps and valve, as well as the drain and recirculation hoses. It gets rid of limescale and mineral buildup and descales your dishes and glassware for sparkling results!

11. Insert a Fridge Drawer Organizer
Keep your fridge organized with pull out drawers that will provide extra shelving space. The clear design ensures you always know what’s inside and is perfect for organizing condiments, vegetables, meats, deli, cheeses and any other food items. It will help you maximize the storage in your fridge and keep things sorted.

12. Use Mason Jars to Combat Countertop Clutter
When you don’t have enough room in your pantry or cabinets, items often get left on the counter. Boxes, bags and plastic containers can look super messy and cluttered. To fix this, put the items in mason jars for a more stylish look that will make your kitchen look less cluttered and more intentional. Nuts, seeds, cookies, granola, pasta and dried fruits would all work well in mason jar containers.

13. Stackable Storage Containers
Upgrade your pantry with these airtight storage bins. They’re stackable so will save you space and the clear design is ideal when you’re in a rush and need ingredients at the ready. They’re super sleek and they come with chalkboard labels so you can keep things extra organized.

Don’t spend more time in the kitchen than you need to. These hacks for cooking, cleaning and storage will save you time and money!
