I would be lying if I said that it was easy for me to come up with blog post ideas all the time. Sure, some topics come to me while I’m cooking dinner or in a yoga class, but there have been times when I’ve sat down at my lap top and my mind goes completely blank. I just sit there staring at the screen with absolutely no direction or inspiration.
Coming up with interesting blog post ideas is actually one of the toughest parts of being a blogger. If you’ve started a blog, it’s likely that you love to write, and once you have a topic, the writing part is easy! But it’s the ideas for the posts themselves that can get a little tricky.
Plus, you want your ideas to be ones that people want to read. If you’re putting hours of work into writing, editing, taking photos, and promoting your blog posts, you want them to be posts people are interested in.
After years of blogging, and figuring out what does and doesn’t work, I’ve come up with a number of strategies for coming up with awesome blog post ideas!
Let’s get to it!
1. Mind maps
One of the best strategies for bloggers to come up with post ideas is to brainstorm through a mind map. Sit down with pen and paper and write down each of your blog categories on a separate piece of paper. Going through one category at a time, write down all the words and ideas that come to mind for each category.
From those words and ideas, dig deeper and write down even more, specific ideas. Mind maps shows relationships between ideas, which makes it easier for you to create new topics. The more specific you get, the better!
2. Get inspiration from your most popular posts
Check your analytics to find out the most popular posts on your blog. This seems like one of the simplest, most obvious things to do, but sometimes the most obvious things totally blow past us. If certain posts are getting really high page views, it means those are the topics people want to read about.
Don’t ignore your stats! Take a look at your most popular posts and create new posts around those topics. Did the post you wrote in the summer on Paleo recipes skyrocket last month? How about writing a post on holiday Paleo recipes as we head into the winter season!
3. Head to Pinterest
Pinterest is chock full of amazing ideas. If you’re struggling to come up with topics to blog about, head over to the platform and do a key word search. Want to write about yoga poses, but need something more specific? A quick search on Pinterest will give you tons of ideas! Don’t copy any posts, but you can use Pinterest for inspiration!
4. Get personal
People love to read about other people’s personal stories, whether it’s their goals, morning routine or blogging income reports. Readers like to feel connected to the blogs they read, and one of the best ways to make them feel connected to you is by getting personal.
Not everyone is comfortable with sharing their personal stories and routines, but if you are up for it, these are the types of posts people love to read. We can’t help it that we’re nosy!
5. Listen to your readers
Do your readers email you to ask questions? Do people comment on your posts with their biggest struggles? Listen to these comments and questions and use them to create blog post ideas.
I’ve had so many people reach out to me asking how to start a lifestyle blog. So, guess what? I wrote a post on how to start a lifestyle blog over on my personal blog! If your readers are reaching out to you, that’s a really good sign. Don’t ignore their requests and make sure to implement them into your upcoming posts!
If you haven’t received any questions, why not ask your readers? Send an email to your subscribers or ask your followers on social media! Reaching out to your readers will make them feel very special, and will likely garner quick responses!
6. Always keep upcoming holidays in mind
Whether it’s Christmas, Black Friday, Thanksgiving, or one of the many other holidays, there are so many potential ideas to think of. Holiday blog posts are insanely popular (especially on social media), so it’s definitely worth it to put holiday posts together. You readers will most likely expect you to do a handful posts around each holiday, so might as well give them what they want!
You can do gift guides, holiday-inspired recipes, cocktail lists, holiday DIYs, the possibilities are endless!
7. Search what’s trending
Topics that are trending will always make popular blog posts. People are already searching for certain topics, so get your foot in the door by writing about one. You can check Twitter, Facebook, or Google Trends to find out what the top searches are and what people are talking and asking about.
For example, the Gilmore Girls revival hit Netflix a couple weeks ago. Leading up to and following the reboot, I’ve seen so many blog posts and articles on major publications about the Gilmore Girls, whether it was How to Dress like Rory Gilmore, or Why the Gilmore Girls Are the Best Role Models. You can be sure that trending topics will always be a hit!
8. Take notes
If you’re like me, a lot of your time is spent reading on the web. If you read an article or blog post that is particularly interesting, make sure to jot down some notes. And anytime an idea comes to you throughout the day, make note of it! Sometimes I get such a great idea, but I forget to write it down, so it disappears from my brain forever.
Create a document where you keep all your ideas for blog posts! This will help you stay organized and keeps the information all in one place. Even if you write down notes in different places throughout the day (your phone, a post it note, your arm), make sure to compile them all into your document!
Coming up with awesome blog post ideas doesn’t have to be a pain. Try these tips and strategies so the process is fun and inspiring. This way you’ll never run out!
